6-Week Generative Workshop: Writing Poetry Inspired by Film

How might the lyrical aspects in film move beyond everyday language itself? Which contemporary poets are writing about film or are influenced by film today?

In this 6-week course, we will identify how contemporary poets use film in their work, and how filmmakers enrich their craft with poetry and poetic moments. Students will explore the influence of film in their own work, drawing inspiration from Lee Ann Roripaugh, Danez Smith, Paisley Rekdal, Chen Chen, Dora Malech, Dayna Patterson, and more.

We will spend five weeks discussing assigned poems and essays and students will be given prompts throughout the workshop in order to complete craft writing exercises. For some workshops, we will generate new work from the craft exercises during class time that you’ll continue working on and revise outside of workshop. For the last class, each student will bring in two poems for the class to workshop. This class is open to poets at all levels of writing; just bring your imagination!

Class meetings will be held over video chat, using Zoom accessed from your private class page. While you can use Zoom from your browser, we recommend downloading the desktop client so you have access to all platform features.

The main goal of this class is for students to generate as much new work as possible. While I will be sharing prompts and sharing poems and essays for inspiration, how much students get out of this course depends on their dedication to their own work.

The first five weeks of class will be for students to have in-depth discussions on the poems and participate in new generative exercises. At the end of Week 5, students should submit at least two poems so that their peers can read and provide feedback prior to the final workshop discussion in Week 6.Students are expected to give written and verbal feedback on their peers’ work.

Course reading load for each week is 2-3 poems and an essay of about 2-3 pages; short videos will also be shared.

Rosebud Ben-Oni
