Poetry collection synopsis: With these poems I am trying to build a country, a country for young black girls to dream, ask questions, and find new meanings for their bodies. Even the dead are here. Our Nation Sits In the Sky is concerned with the balances grief and joy, girlhood and maturity, race and history and celebrations of Blackness and the all mighty ‘our.’ The inclusion of tenderness and lineage with one word. The collection considers grief as a constant and maybe friend.

Chelsea Williams

Chelsea Willams is an emerging poet, screenwriter, photographer, and filmmaker from Chicago, IL. As a multidisciplinary artist, she believes the purpose of art and storytelling is to simultaneously reflect what the world is and to create the world. Her poems have been published in issues of the winter 2018 High Shelf Press and the Anthology In Absentia: Poems for the Pandemic. Her poem “After Sam Cooke” was selected as a finalist for the 2020 Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize. Chelsea received her BFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
